The money goes mostly for advertising, entertainment, and the vast majority goes into the prize fund. The bigger the pay out, the greater the chance of getting more competitors. The more competitors the better the competition. The better the competition, the better the event is.
Nearly 50% of the total budget goes back into the contestants’ pockets, and the Montana BBQ Cook-Off will have a great day if it retains 10 to 15% of the total dollars raised.
Because it works. 60% allows the competitor to cover their expenses. The more they vend the more they make. Most of the 40% goes to covering the purse and to pay for the supplies (napkins, sanitation towels, utensils for samples, service ware for samples, etc.) we provide to the contestants. We are one of the few events that a competitor can make money without even scoring prize money.
